Picking a Dining Room Table
Choosing a dining room table can be tough. There are certainly many styles to choose from, and so many factors to keep in mind during the process. For example, the size and shape of your dining room, how many people you hope to seat, and the design motif of your home. Let’s take a look at these factors and come up with some dining room tables to spruce up your home.
Dining Rooms of All Shapes and Sizes
The size and shape of a dining room can have a tremendous effect on which dining room table you choose – or even whether you can have one! Before picking up any furniture, make sure to get a good feel for the space.
If your dining area is spacious, you have your work cut out for you! There are so many options to choose from with layout, seating, and styles that it’ll take some time to get it all figured out. If you have a grand hall or a large dining room area in your home, larger tables might be in order. With a big space, smaller tables tend to feel dwarfed.
The more space you have, the more options you have. But as space becomes smaller, where pieces go and which pieces to buy shrinks. And in some cases, there just may not be enough room. However, before counting your space out, there are plenty of creative solutions for smaller dining tables. There are storage solutions to make life easier for build-up and take-down, and you can do wonders with removable leaves. With enough planning, you can usually make it work.
Make sure to measure your space before making any purchases, and visualize how your table will look. If your space is an unusual shape, that will come into play as well. Square footage shouldn’t be counted if it isn’t useful! For example, some dining rooms have heating or cooling units that cut off entire sections of wall and reduce seating. Some doors need room to open, and if their open radius cuts into your dining room space you might run into some trouble.
As long as you consider the size and shape of your dining room space and take measurements, you should be safe when choosing your dining room table. Don’t forget to include the sitting space in your measurements!
How Many People Are You Seating?
People like to be comfortable during their meals. Having too many people close together can be an elbow disaster. Take a practical approach to this and think about how often you have people over for seated dinners, and how many people usually attend.
If you only have people over on holidays, you may not need a table that seats as many. You can go all out on cozy chairs and give everyone plenty of room. If you regularly have lots of people over for dinner parties, or if you have a large family, you may need to buy a table with more seating available. Most of the tables available at Kings Impressions have an extension option. Allow the table to be small when it is just your family and extend to add an additional 10 people when you host a party.
If your space only allows for four people to be seated comfortably at a smaller table, but you need just a little extra, consider bench seating. These are phenomenal for adding a little extra seating without sacrificing comfort – there’s no chair rearrangement, and no armrests to get in the way with bench seating. These are especially useful for families with children – they can sit together without using all the space of typical chairs.
Color Palettes, Styles, and Motifs
After getting a general idea of what size and type of seating your dining room table will have, now comes the fun part: picking out a style! Whether you’re looking for something traditional or a little more modern, there are plenty of dining room table options available at Kings Impressions. Make sure the table you pick matches the style of the dining room, and the rest of your home.
For example, in a home with a traditional style, simple hardwood designs with lighter tones would be perfect. In a home with modern themes, a more ornate table with darker tones would look right at home. Sometimes, using your dining room table as a splash piece is a great way to make a room pop.
A good way to find out if the piece you’ve found will match your home: take a picture of the piece and hang it, or hold it up, in the room where it would live. If it fits, and if you can visualize holidays and meals with ease, purchase the piece!
The tables at Kings Impressions are all made with solid hardwood on the East Coast, with most of them being made by our extended family in Ohio.
